Description
Lamotrigine is medication curing epilepsy and/or bipolar disorders. Considering epilepsy it is associated to handle different kind of seizures, including partial, primary, and secondary ones.
Similarly to various anticonvulsants, Lamictal (Lamotrigine) acts as an efficient mood stabilizing medication, and eventually it is the only Food and Drug Administration’s endorsed medication for such applications not including lithium, a component endorsed three decades before. It is used for therapy of bipolar disorders type 1.
Lamotrigine chemical compound does not resemble other anticonvulsant drugs (because of belonging to Phenyltriazines). Lamotrigine (Lamictal) possesses few adverse reactions and does not demand prior and/or post blood examinations. The precise mechanism of lamotrigine’s acting is not totally studied.
Some believe the main mechanism is associated to a sodium channel blockage, despite the fact that lamotrigine has very few adverse reactions compared to other anticonvulsant drugs which block sodium channels as well, (for example Oxcarbazepine), which indirectly says Lamotrigine possesses another way of working.
Epilepsy and convulsions
Lamotrigine is endorsed in the United States for treating of convulsions. Lamotrigine is an FDA-approved drug for seizures conjuncted with LGS (the most complicated type of epilepsy). Lamotrigine considerably decreases the frequency of LGS attacks. Conjunction with Valproate is tolerant, but it may lift the risk of lamotrigine-impelled attack, and needs the dosage to be decreased because of interaction of the two medications.
Additionally Lamotrigine (Lamictal) is prescribed as 1st line treatment for infantile epilepsy.
Bipolar disorders
While usual anticonvulsants are mostly anti-frenzy, the most evident fact of Lamotrigine’s efficiency is in the prevention of bipolar disorders. It is FDA approved in the United States for supportive therapy of type 1 Bipolar disorders. But the drug is not so efficient in the back-up treatment of chronic bipolar disorder. The researchers say that Lamotrigine (Lamictal) cures bipolar disorders with no referring to hypomania and/or chronic mental disorders.
Off-label usage
Off-label application comprises the curing of headaches, migraines, pain killing. Off-label psychiatric application comprises the curing of bipolar type 2 disorders, schizoaffective problems, etc.
At low dosages (off-label use) Lamictal might work as a mild anti-depressant.
Adverse reactions
Lamotrigine RX information contains precautions about dangerous skin irritations.
The GSK Inc. claims almost all side effects incidents occur in the first 2 up to 8 weeks of treatment and if the patient stops intake instantly and after is back to a normal dosing.
General adverse reactions of Lamotrigine are as follows:
- headaches;
- body and muscle aches;
- abdominal and back pain;
- dizziness;
- blurred or double vision;
- weight loss;
- rash;
- etc.
In clinical experiments females experienced side effects more often than males.
