Description

Bimatoprost is a preparation based on the chemical features of prostaglandin, and which has been found to do wonders cosmetically as well as for medical reasons for eyes. The drug is of great use in ocular field (including off-label use) and is utilized for treating many eye ailments.

Indications

Let us look at some of the properties and uses of this drug:

• COSMETIC APPLICATION. On 5th of Dec 2008 Food and Drug Administration advisory committee (dermatologic and ophthalmologic division, AD or Advisory committee is the main approval/disapproval instrument of FDA which in 90% of cases eventually makes the final decision) recommended (eventually said ‘Yes’) to use Bimatoprost to darken/lengthen eyelashes since it had been noted that persons who used this drug for medical reasons had long eyelashes. A number of tests were conducted to confirm this correlation and then only FDA had approved Bimatoprost for the above mentioned cosmetic use.
• FAT LOSS. Studies of few case series had reported that Bimatoprost can reduce the orbital fat though the effect was reversible. This was noted in the patients who applied this dug for glaucoma therapy. This property could be attributed to the fact that it is an analogue of PGF2 alpha which too is reported to reduce the adipose tissue.
• MEDICAL EFFICACY. This drug is used as topical eye drops for the treatment of ocular hypertension and management of glaucoma by controlling its progression. It does so by reducing the intraocular pressure.

Side Effects

With uses come the burden of side effects. Patient may experience the eye discomford, redness, blurred vision, burning sensation during use and sometimes there may be a permanent thickening and blackening of eye lashes.
